I Am Not Madame Bovary
Director Feng Xiaogang dazzles with the unique framing, alternating between an intimate circle and a rigid portrait. The setup concentrates where the spectator can gaze at, allowing for bold and focused cinematography. Fan Bingbing is a fine anchor as the main protagonist, bouncing from tragic heroine, to lady vengeance, to likable goofball, as she attempts to navigate a stubborn political system. The commentary is light and while its themes of repetition and frustration resonate, they drag over the 2 hour runtime.
