The Edge of Seventeen

An unrelenting script that’s witty, honest, and all too real, The Edge of Seventeen is painfully loyal to the complexities of growth and mental health, and has the R-rating to prove it. Hailee Steinfeld is a magnetic lead, flanked by an AA love interest, Hayden Szeto–quite the rarity, and rounded out with teacher Woody Harrelson as a bottomless pool of sarcasm. Much of Seventeen’s success rests on its ability to understand teenage selfishness as a mechanism of maturation, empathy and self-preservation. The end product is a heart-warming coming-of-age that hits all the right notes.
