Brief Encounter

Most of the love affair between Laura Jesson and Alec Harvey–based on Noël Coward’s play, Still Life–feels rote, even simplistic. Their story echos tropes of ‘what could have been’ and ‘never meant to be,’ among many others. However, David Lean complements the stars with a compelling setting, the train station, establishing routine and familiarity to give Brief Encounter its emotional core. The film’s small, but vital, supporting cast work hard to establish a sense of realism, grounding the fantastical romance for the better.
